The curse of COVID-19 had hard heads thinking hard about the perils of crossing borders and venturing East to stage Mornington Masters 8 in March 2021. The perils prevailed and the Mornington Masters was put on hold.

But the show must go on and, in the spirit of hitting COVID for six, what better and safer surroundings than the great golf courses, boutique breweries and world class wineries scattered around our magnificent South West. And what better hospitality and fine dining could be had than at the Southern Club House at Binningup.

And so was born the . . .

SQUANCEY GETS THE MAIDEN

Another new tournament and another raging success. In golf, the Squancenator was the dominator, winning 3 of the 6 courses and going into the final round 9 points in the lead. With 39 points at The Cut he must've felt assured but was still looking nervous as The Little Master careered home with a sensational 46 points to fall 2 points shy. Macca proved too consistent for the rest to complete the maiden Masters podium. Les Gray and Phil Hipsley were in the leader mix early but were unable to play the 6 courses.

The golf had its highs (at Capel and The Cut) and lows (at Pinjarra) with course difficulty and occasionally the weather resulting in scores of 30 or more being achieved in just over one-third of games.

The social side was headed by the Black Tie Dinner followed by some magnificent home cooked culinary offerings and eating out firsts, including the Crooked Carrot and Old Coast Road Brewery.

FAVOURITE DAYS

  • First day, which included the Black Tie dinner.
  • Last golf day at The Cut, which included a “big breakfast” for dinner.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Master Blaster making an unexpected but greatly welcomed return to the tee – and a win in the first round!
  • The rain at Bunbury Golf Club and the floods we drove through to get there
  • The Green Door Winery lunch
  • The Backbeach Café lunch
  • A club first – Mini golf
  • The Presidential visit.

Special mentions – Litt’s 27 at The Cut; Les’ 63 at Collie and Capel; Phil’s 83 at Collie, Capel and Bunbury; and Tom's 46 at The Cut
