CHRIS IN A CLOSE CONTEST

It was an exciting tussle between these two golfing talents after they shot ahead of the field with three rounds played, their best two scores the same and 10 points clear of their nearest rival. They remained locked on the same score going into the compulsory last round, with Walks their only potential threat 6 points in arrears. Chris was making things difficult with a 21 point front 9 to Squancey's creditable 18 but Squancey wasn't done. Approaching the 17th hole, Squancey had made up the deficit and it was 35 points apiece. Fate? Bad Luck? Who knows, but a wiped 17th for him against a consistently scoring Jacko was the difference in a Masters week that was different, innovative, cooperative and yet another sensational golfing and socialising experience.

All who participated made valuable contributions to a week different from any other. Some highlights:

  • The very cosy bus, bodies and buggies
  • Our upstairs/downstairs funky accommodation - thanks Squancey - with a very accommodating host
  • Money Man Macca squeezed the most from club finances to minimise costs - thanks Macca and to his spreadsheet sidekick Squancey
  • Flash new trophies - thanks Walks
  • The Welcome bag (including the MM8 Golf Guide - thanks Dalbs); Mystery box which revealed an MM8 monogrammed golf towel; and MM8 logo golf balls - thanks Tom
  • Snazzy NTP and LD markers and a prize for the tournament NTP and LD - another thanks Tom!
  • Jacko's superb and varied catering. We are fortunate to have such talent - thanks Chris
  • The Capital Ploughmans, quite a feast (loved the pork pies) and an Ale to wash it down - thanks Jeff
  • A new course - Rosebud; all courses in very good nick; and a very wet St Andrews
  • A surprise 75th birthday cake. Dalbs was gobsmacked - thanks team!
  • The very few card nights by comparison
  • The pokies afternoons with fortunes won and lost
  • Some interesting and inexpensive eateries, but the broken pizza oven didn't go down well

MM8 2021 – Cancelled due to COVID

With the sale of the Eastern Seaboard Clubhouse, the future of the Masters is yet to be determined. Despite cancellation of MM8, research went into planning for the event. That valuable information has been retained to assist in any deliberations for a return to Mornington some time in the future.

A future MM8 Scenario

Season Summary

MM7 2019 (3 - 8 March)

LITTLE MASTER PREVAILS

His was a modest start to the week. That gammy knee and the double-tuck, triple fold over, twice-wrapped knee support bandage routine took a day to warm up. What followed was five rounds of par or better golf with crisp, firm ball striking and solid determination and it paid off big time. Tom completed the Masters tied with a resurgent Dalbs on a record winning score but his consistent efforts were rewarded making him a very worthy Mornington Masters winner. Dalbs had no great expectations for the week, having played through very indifferent form in the lead up, but was totally chuffed at being able to reproduce some of those shots that had seemed a distant memory. Scobes had the "bookends", winning the first (convincingly) and last rounds but lacked (uncharacteristically) consistency in the middle. But it was enough to complete the podium finishers.

It was described as "The best Mornington Masters yet" (who thought that could happen?) but there were plenty of reasons:

  • A week of memorable weather – warm, hailstones, little wind;
  • Those "refreshments" for the drive down;
  • The return of the LUXURY portable bathroom and the comfortable air beds
  • Another brilliant Scobes' Form Guide within an ace of picking the winning form;
  • Stunning boxed souvenir gold medallions from the Perth Mint and a classic group photo to adorn a wall;
  • New lunch venues with excellent food and wines – Point Leo and Port Phillip Estates;
  • A new course - Bay Views; and a return to The Dunes. Given the hot eastern summer, all courses were in very good nick;
  • Jeff's memorable shot landing up the possum's . . . .;
  • The song sheets which generated raucous outbursts that faintly resembled singing;
  • Gorgeous Julie who bravely collected her misdirected food box thinking the place at number 124 looked like a "druggies house";
  • A first for the Match Play competition, played over some testing courses in great spirit;
  • Jeffs magnificent shots at two Cape Schanck par 3's to collect 21 golf balls in the Par 3's Birdies Jackpot;
  • Fine dining at The Club House Restaurant – Jacko's BBQ'ing wizardry; Tom and Jeff's wine and cheese night; Ronzo's toasted sandwich delicacies and energy-boosting dessert (chocolate ice cream with M&Ms);
  • The milestones – Dalbs (399) and Scobes (299) on the last day – made memorable by superb certificates (Ronzo/Little creations).

    - Fly Tuesday, play Wednesday to Tuesday with Saturday off;
    areturn Wednesday;
  • Retain start times but devise a plan to avoid rushing to get to lunch venues;
  • An annual Masters provided someone other than Ronzo is prepared to do the organisational work;
  • An extra column for betting odds prior to the final round;
  • Put the Bunnings table out before the week starts.

MM6 2017 (5 - 10 March)

JUMPIN' JACKO'S JUBILANT

He jumped out of the blocks, producing the most withering start to the Masters to-date. Scores of 45 and 40 over the first three days would require a superb effort to knock Mr Consistent off his lofty pedestal and the 3 times Masters Champion Steely Steve gave it a good shot (actually heaps of good shots) but fell just short while Rambunctious Ronzo, also with a great jump-start on the first day (44 points) finally did enough to realise his life's one ambition – a podium finish at the Mornington Masters.

The Masters just keep getting better, with the previous "best yet" MM5 considered to be outdone by a brilliantly organised and outrageously enjoyable week. Highlights included:

  • A week of sublime weather
  • The "refreshments" for the drive down and after each game
  • Having CoJack closely involved
  • Macca's miracle recovery
  • The LUXURY portable bathroom
  • New blow-up beds (not the ISIS kind)
  • Another brilliant Scobes' Form Guide – an uncanny ability not to pick the winning form;
  • The "International" attire
  • Souvenir MM6 stand-up plaques
  • GBWGC Gold, Silver and Bronze medals
  • Introduction of the "Tally Room"
  • Our return to the National Golf Club
  • The "Eagle" chair lift ride
  • Some top lunch venues – Flinders Pub the pick; Jacko's catering wizardry; Tom and Jeff's wine and cheese night
  • The milestones – Jacko (200); Tom (250); Ron (350) and Scobes (200 and 250!!)

The 2017 Even Better Ifs (EBIs)

NTP/LD; Par 3 Stableford Competition

MM5 2015 (1 - 6 March)

NAE SCOOPS THE POOL

Pure golfing ability and consistency were the hallmarks of the 2015 Mornington Masters champion. Nae was not only a clear championship winner, but also won all three novelty competitions decided across the 6 day event. A very humble and gracious winner who's secret to golfing success is "I just want to have fun". The Little Master pushed our champion over the first three games, which included two wins, but couldn't maintain the rage, while Dalbs continued his penchant for a podium place.

MM5 was considered the best yet and with good reason:

  • The largest GBW contingent yet
  • A week of cool weather
  • The "refreshments" for the drive down
  • The clubhouse handles a record turnout with ease
  • The LUXURY portable bathroom
  • Scobes' brilliant Form Guide – an uncanny ability to pick winning form; the ETIQUETTE
  • Three new novelty competitions
  • Souvenir MM5 plaques
  • Peninsula Hot Springs and the memorable hill top pool
  • Nae gets OOGA BOOGA'd
  • Excellent course conditions - some bunkers and Portsea the exceptions
  • Eagle Ridge a real surprise packet
  • A new Mornington Masters Trophy and a memento celebrating our 21st away fixture
  • Some top lunch venues and WA Jacko's breakfasts and "toasties"
  • The EBI's

MM2 2009 (15 - 20 March)

STEVE MASTERS THE FIELD

2009 MM winnerSteve stepped up for a well deserved maiden Masters victory after a week of consistent golf. His 9 point lead over a dogged Scobes after four rounds looked unassailable and so it proved, trimmed only by 1 point at the finishing post. Scobes blew a fetlock over the final two rounds, the Canberra Kid and Walks getting inside runs to play themselves into second and third spots.

The new "Daily Ratings" concept showed just how much the boys enjoy the week, averaging a daily 8.7. T'Gallant and lunch at Jacks continue as highlights while our opening and closing holes – Dunes and Moonah – confirmed as permanent fixtures.

MM1 2008 (12 - 19 April)

BIG BREEZY WINS FIRST MASTERS

2008 Masters winnerThe inaugural Mornington Masters was taken out by a very worthy winner. Mr Consistent scored over 30 points in all but one of the six challenging courses, winning by 7 points from Snout.

The Masters week was an outstanding success thanks to the hard work of the Allardice boys, Litts and Macca with stoic support from the other attendees. It has no doubt staked a claim for permanent fixturing on the GBWGC calender.
