HOW IT CAME TO BE

Once upon a time, in a State far away, the Mornington Masters evolved. After two consecutive years of competition, it became either biennial or every second year! And so the idea of a Not the Mornington Masters in the intervening years was floated but kept sinking.

A plan was hatched in early January 2016 for the first NMM but, unbeknowns, Legless Les Gray and wife Debbie had already constructed a purpose-built 7-star GBW clubhouse on the canal at Mandurah. Ron Allardice was the man to reveal that closely kept secret and to christen the prestigious event . . .

. . . the MANDURAH MASTERS.

ROLLICKING RONZO ROMPS HOME

It was a record gathering of golfing hopefuls for the 5th running of the very popular Mandurah Masters. And, as with the previous two tournaments, the 2024 trophy winner stamped his authority on the first day. Ronzo, whose lead-up form was anything but convincing, romped around Meadow Springs for an eye grabbing 45 points. Didn't take his hand off the throttle over the next two days playing neatly to handicap. The Little Master was a worthy adversary, playing better than handicap over all three rounds while our two-times winner of the event, Jacko, was thereabouts but just couldn't conjure up that steady form.

Some observations on a fantastic event:

  • Our stunning accommodation swallowed up the 12 contestants in comfortable style
  • The organisation, energy and support put in by Les was par excellence
  • Perfect weather, and the best experienced at The Cut
  • Chris's superb culinary delights with Squancey in support
  • Just one card night
  • The 500 game barrier finally broken
  • A new, innovative and very popular side competition each day
  • Three top golf courses in pretty good nick
  • Stress balls!

The 2024 Rules

  • Stableford Competition
  • Handicaps not changed during event.
  • Lost Ball/Unplayable Ball – Penalty 1 stroke and ball placed on fairway st the nearest point of relief.
  • Preferred lies on fairways.

WHIRLWIND WALKS WINS MM4

A quality 6 players trekked to Mandurah for "one of the best golfing trips". And the title was all but won by Walks on the first day but not before some spirited play from Macca with a dicky hip; a blistering round from Tom at the Cut; and the odd reminder or six from Les on the "lethargy" toward his Winter Trophy win.

Some Masters notables:

  • Easter eggs and arrival bags on the beds
  • The luxury accommodation so generously shared
  • Efforts to appease the Les Gray mantra "too little, too late"
  • Quoits introduced for the first time
  • All in bed before midnight on one occasion
  • Walks and Ronzo making vain attempts on separate nights to walk through a wire door
  • Those Chocolate Royals . . .
  • The boat trip

The 2022 Rules

  • Stableford Competition
  • Handicaps not changed during event.
  • Lost Ball – Penalty 1 stroke and ball placed on fairway nearest to where it was lost.
  • Preferred lies on fairways.
  • No “gimmies”.
  • Drop one of first 2 rounds.
  • Smaller groups to play first – no ifs or buts.
  • Balls jackpot if NTP or LD not achieved.
  • Flags to remain in cups unless person putting requests removal.
  • “Ready Golf” at all times
  • And most important of all, relax . . .

MAGNIFICENT MANDURAH MASTERS 2

The lust for placing hands on the erotic winners trophy drew extra numbers to the second running of the Mandurah Masters. Macca and Steve got to wallow in the luxury of our 7-star Club Santavea accommodation and, like all of us, were mightily impressed. That such a clubhouse should be purpose built is quite an achievement.

The more challenging Meadow Springs produced 4 sub-centurions. Steve was one of them after some power hitting and was immediately stripped of his MM L-plates. The golf-poor Allardice boys were both in the running and that serial podium pest, Lindsay, was also in the mix. But the day (just) belonged to Squancey who made light work of the par 3's (2 birdies) and came home with the least number of putts to nudge out Iron Man Steve, also with 2 birdies and just 1 putt behind Squancey. Last years winner, Jacko, knocked himself out of contention on just one hole – a 14 on the 16th par 3 (OUCH!)

But Mandurah Country Club had its moments and Jacko was making the most of them while Lindsay had less success and it ended up a 13 stroke turn-around with Jacko (185) easing to the title by but 3 strokes. After the Mandurah Masters Trophy was officially unveiled, he wasn't sure he'd done the right thing by winning it!

The Little Master, despite being in a catatonic jet-lagged state, took the bronze (201), that metronomic swing producing some cracking shots. It was just that the small matter of a 13 on one hole at Meadow Springs (bugger that sand!) did put a dent in things.

While there were winners on the golf course, perhaps the big winner was getting together again with Les, Sam and Lindsay and the comaraderie, good humour and memorable moments shared during the first of hopefully many Mandurah Masters.

  • 2 stroke penalty for a lost ball

MANDURAH MASTERS 1 MAGIC

The inaugural Mandurah Masters was a resounding success. "Club Santavea" truly was 7-star accommodation and has set the standard for Mornington to follow!! It was luxury living and gourmet eating (alas no crabs) to delight the most discerning visitor.

Golf did manage to get a look-in amid such opulence and there were two clear candidates vying for top honours. Lindsay streeted the field on the first day after some GBW boys worked him into form in a Kennedy Bay warm-up. Linds was 10 strokes clear of Mr (Jacko) Consistent and all smiles on the podium.
